Yeast free week!

Our family observes the biblical Feasts in the Old and New Testament of Passover and Unleavened Bread.  We have noticed some positive changes from eliminating all yeast and leavening products from our son’s diet.   It seems that his speech while playing has been louder and more pronounced.

We have also noticed some positive cognitive improvements lately.  It is unclear if this could also be related to the addition of the folic acid or GABA.  He not only understands what I am saying when speaking to others but several hours later he still remembers what what stated.

It is hard to give up yeast and other products for a time period, but definitely worth it!

An example: I told my husband that I was going to get a granola bar for my breakfast, my son who loves granola bars, didn’t say anything at the time but 8 hours later when I arrived home from work he asked about the granola bar.  One, he doesn’t normally remember things that are told to him this long of a time period after the conversation, two, he also doesn’t appear to pay attention to conversations that others are having.

Folic Acid benefits!

I read a book recently titled “Changing the Course of Autism” by Bryan Jepson who is an ER doctor and parent of an autistic child.  His book can be very detailed in some areas for those who understand the medical aspect of autism but it is written in a manner that parents can understand and relate to.

At the end of his book he lists several natural remedies that are helpful in improving the symptoms of this disorder.  As always there is a caution about trying too many treatments and the success  rate being low.

Folic Acid was listed among the vitamins to add to the diet.  I picked up a bottle at the store and started him out with 1 tablet.  He has made some improvements with this addition to his diet as well.  While visiting with a friend recently who hadn’t seen our son in awhile she made a comment about his behavior being an improvement from the last time.  I told her about the addition of Folic Acid and she informed me that this is a very important but helpful vitamin to the body and that he should be taking at least 800mg of FA a day.

I made this change to his diet and I noticed a change!  One of my concerns has been that his retention level is very low.  We go over the same lesson every day with him not remembering it.  Now, I noticed that he is picking up on our family’s conversations with each other and remembering hours later.

One of my son’s favorite foods is granola bars.  My oldest daughter and I were leaving one morning and didn’t have time for breakfast, I told my husband that I would just grab a granola bar for her on the way.  My son heard me say this but didn’t say anything about it before I left.  As soon as we arrived home several hours later the first thing he asked about was if we had any granola bars?  I had even made the comment to my daughter that I wonder if he would remember me saying it and ask about it when we got home!!

Is that a success story or what?

Joyful moments of parenting!

A few weeks ago we experienced joy as a situation presented itself that made us realize that all that various “treatments” we have been using is helping our son  become a normal little boy!

He has been going to the bathroom by himself for awhile now so this time was no different.  However! either due to boredom or curiosity he found a magic marker somewhere and decided that it would be fun to write all over the bathroom wall!

As I’m cleaning the wall and telling my son that we don’t write on walls, my husband comes in and reminds me that this is what normal little boys do!  🙂  This is one of those moments that you have to decide to discipline or rejoice in the fact that he is growing up and on his way to recovery?

HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) Therapy or alternatives?

I have been reading several different resources giving various tips and resources in the treatment of autism.  Several times I have come across the reference of using HBOT therapy in treating autism.  We have found several people who state that this treatment is extremely effective!  It can be used for various health issues not just autism; diabetes, wound recovery, ADD, ADHD,

If you do any research you will notice that this treatment is fairly expensive and for most not an available treatment plan due to cost.

A friend told me recently that another alternative might be a portable breathing treatment, that can be purchased at any medical supply store.  However, when I called a few places I was told that this would require a prescription in order to provide this treatment.  I plan on doing more research but if you have tried this option and have achieved success please write and share your story.  My friend didn’t think that a doctor’s order might be needed since it did not contain medicine.

I will continue to do more research and post any updates!

If you are not familiar with HBOT therapy you can read an article from a doctor from DAN (Defeat Autism Now), a national autism pro-activist.
