New Treatment in Autism – Kefir

A friend told me recently that a new treatment for autism recently is using coconut kefir for health improvements.  We have been using milk kefir for the last few years, just not consistently.  Our kefir is grown by leaving it out on the counter for a couple of days to “grow” then we transfer it over to another container while we make smoothies from the juice and granules.

When the kefir looks like cottage cheese and gives an odor that means it is ready to transfer to a new batch.  There are many health improvements from using kefir.  I recommend using the actual granules not a kefir starter unless you are making the coconut kefir recipe, also an important note if you use kefir starter packets – they may have added ingredients in them that you would counteract what you are trying to accomplish with an all natural diet.

  1. Whoa, that’s an intense list. I’d need to research it further. How do you get it in to a picky eater? How is it better than yogurt? What’s your source for this list? Sorry lotsa questions but I’m very interested. My DS (5) is HFCA.

    1. Thank you for writing. In response to your question about where I obtained the information regarding the benefits check out this link.

      For us we will mix it in his applesauce of fruit smoothies, ice cream, etc. If you are dairy free there are many products available that are a great substitute for dairy products. Your child doesn’t need a lot of kefir grains to notice the effect, just a small amount. I originally obtained my kefir from friends which we have continued to grow since.

      The difference that I have found with kefir as opposed to yogurt is that because you actually consume the grains it will have more health benefits than yogurt. When you purchase yogurt in the store you will notice that many of them contain High Fructose Corn Syrup and a myriad of other preservatives that are not good for your child. Also yogurt contains dairy where as kefir can be grown in soy milk, almond milk and other means.

      We have noticed that kefir will grow quicker in soy milk than regular cow’s milk, which means you will have to transfer it out sooner. The good bacteria feed on the sugar in the milk and produce more granules. When they run out of “food” milk they will require a change out or they will die off.

      Before trying kefir we have always used yogurt. After a health problem with repeated antibiotics and other health issues a friend told me about kefir. She told me that we would have less health problems because of it. During this time we were in the company of people who kept getting sick, and were passing the virus around. I started my kids on kefir smoothies and our colds/flu that were experiencing at the moment were ended shortly after they started!

      NOTE: at this time we are using milk kefir not coconut kefir!!

    1. Thank you for the comment. When I say to consume the grains I am referring to the actual kefir granules. We don’t use the kefir starter as we found that it contained yeast and other fillers that we didn’t want to consume.

      The kefir granules look like cottage cheese and is grown by letting it sit on the counter in milk. The “bacteria” (live cultures) eat the sugars in the milk which is what makes it grow.

      This “bacteria” has more benefits for your body than yogurt. The granules can be quite chewy and a little awkward to consume. If you add it to smoothies the texture is not as noticeable.

        1. My sin was recently diagnosed with Autism. We immediately put him on GFCFSF diet. Problem is he still suffers from constipation and we are having trouble potty training as a result (he’s 4). I’ve been thinking about water kefir for him but worry about the yeast aspect. Many beleive our autistic children suffer from yeast overgrowth. What are your thoughts on the yeast? Do you see a DAN doctor for your child? If so, what does he say?

        2. I have a newborn at home and have been battling a yeast infection for a few months due to antibiotics for mastitis. I want to try the water kefir (I’m vegan) but again, I worry about the yeast.


      2. Thanks for the email! I would definitely recommend using kefir to solve your yeast issues. I was suffering from a yeast and bacterial infection when a friend told me about the benefits of kefir for yeast problems. Once I saw the benefits to my health in using kefir I put my son on it. If you can, try to get kefir granules not packets/starters the granules have more healthy bacteria than a packet. We’ve also noticed that once we started the kefir, our sons bowel movements improved to the point that we had to make sure he was near the bathroom or there would be an accident.

        My son does not see a DAN doctor. I have had many struggles trying to get a primary care doctor to test my son for his health issues, so many changes are done by family preferences. The kefir granules I have were started our in cow’s milk. We have switched the granules to soy or almond milk depending on what we have on hand.

        I understand your concerns about yeast, the good bacteria in kefir will help your body heal and lesson if not eliminate the infections. Also kefir will help put beneficial bacteria back into your body that the antibiotics are killing off.

        I agree that yeast overgrowth plays a big part in autistic symptoms. Restoring the body to proper health will help your child’s mental, physical, and emotional well being.

    Great blog – lots of useful information ! I want to start Goat milk Kefir for my child.
    can you recommend a good source to procure the grains, I dont want the starter but real grains , as you said above the starter has many things we dont want !

    1. Hello, thanks for reading my blog. I apologize for taking the time to respond sooner. In regards to obtaining kefir; I would recommend either searching online at various sources such as ebay, amazon, etc. but the place I was able to pick up kefir grains is either by friends or via a co-op. If you are part of a co-op or other community source then I would ask them if they have kefir available that you can either purchase or that someone will give you.

      However, a key note is to ensure how the grains have been grown. It is possible to grow them in other milk but the problem is you can kill them if you change the milk supply too often.

        they (grains ) are doing well with raw milk !

  3. A cup Lifeway Kefir also supplies about 30% of the daily calcium requirement and 4 grams of protein. Because the kefir grains were considered as tribal wealth, they were inherited from generation to generation and possession wasn’t easy. Fiber is a very important element in the digestive process that is missing from today’s high-fat, sugary, processed diet.

    1. Sorry for the delay in response. If you haven’t found it already, if you are part of a homeschool group or health group many people who have started with kefir grains in these groups will have so much that they often give it away. Therefore, I would suggest put on an email request to any groups that you are apart of and someone might know of someone else who can help you! I hope that helps!
